Sri Lanka is facing a severe economic crisis. Thus the prices of essential commodities there are constantly rising. Parliamentary Speaker Karu Jayasuriya has lamented that the prices of food items in the country are skyrocketing and the situation will worsen if appropriate steps are not taken.

In a post on Twitter, he said, “Food prices are skyrocketing. If the government does not take significant action, the price of a kilo of rice will cross 400 rupees in the next few weeks. Mere price controls will not work and will not work. Serious intervention is needed to ensure basic food supply for all.”
