93% of French people are in favor of tougher sanctions
According to a survey carried out by Odoxa for Winamax and RTL, 70% of French people have a bad opinion of football fans. A statistic that has unfortunately only increased for several years now. Already surveyed after Nice-Marseille during which Dimitri Payet received a bottle of water in September 2021, 63% of public opinion claimed to have a negative image of the Ligue 1 stands. 55% in March 2019.
Furthermore, according to 55% of those questioned, violence caused by supporters is greater in France than in other countries. With the increase in homophobic and racist chants in the stadiums as well as attacks and threats, the image of the stands of the French championship seems very dark. This week, Fabio Grosso, OL coach, expressed concern about the glaring lack of security surrounding French football. “We must not wait for something even more serious to make important decisions,” insists the former Italian legend for his first press conference after his attack.
Faced with this increase in incidents in football stadiums, 93% of French people are in favor of toughening sanctions for criminal behavior and resorting to prison for the most serious acts. Within the framework of OM-OL, sentences of up to 5 years in prison for the offenses of provocation and incitement to racial hatred for Lyonnais, and up to 3 years for intentional violence with weapons for Marseillais are planned.
Unfortunately, the fight against these criminal acts remains too weak. If the police (68%) are the only actor in whom the French trust to fight effectively against the excesses of supporters, the majority of them have no confidence in the authorities of French football, the LFP (63%) and the FFF (61%), nor in the Ministry of Sports (63%). The reflection of an inaction which seems to condemn football stadiums in France to see violence persist and continue to develop over time.
