Algerian football leaders have opted for a radical change of direction. Algeria has decided to withdraw its candidacy for the organization of the 2025 and 2027 editions of the African Cup of Nations (CAN), the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) announced on Tuesday, on the eve of the designation of the host countries.

The FAF “officially sent a letter to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) informing it of its decision to withdraw Algeria’s candidacy for the organization of the African Cup of Nations (CAN)” in 2025 and 2027, according to the federation’s press release.

For 2025, Algeria was in competition with Morocco and a joint file presented by Benin and Nigeria. For 2027, it had to compete with Senegal and Botswana as well as a joint candidacy from Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

“This withdrawal is motivated by the FAF’s new approach to the football development strategy in Algeria,” the Federation further indicated.

According to the FAF press release, which was published the same day as the installation of its new president, Walid Sadi, the Algerian federation “will now concentrate its efforts on the reorganization and revitalization of football in Algeria, as well as reiterates its unwavering commitment to the development of African football.”

The Executive Committee of CAF, the African football body, will meet on Wednesday in Cairo, before a press conference by its president, South African Patrice Motsepe, during which this leader will announce the identity of the host countries of the 2025 and 2027 editions.
