The Iraqi Football Association has agreed with Spanish coach Jesus Casas to renew his contract as coach of the national team for the coming period.
A statement by the Football Association received by the (INA) stated that “Kassas will continue his journey with our national team for a new period, as he will lead our team in the decisive Asian qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.”
He added, “The President of the Iraqi Football Association, Adnan Darjal, met today, Saturday, with the coach of the national team, Jesus Casas, at the headquarters of La Liga, in the presence of the second vice president of the association, Younis Mahmoud, and the member of the association, Ahmed Al-Moussawi. During the meeting, the next stage of the national team was discussed, and the pursuit of achieving the desired goals in the upcoming events, the most important of which are the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, as our national team will play two matches in the first and second rounds against the Omani national team in Basra on 5/9 and against Kuwait on 10/9 in Kuwait.”
According to the statement, Darjal said, “Kassas’s continued presence with the national team is an important step in terms of stability in the ranks of our national team. He stressed the importance of the two matches, as winning their points will provide a great boost towards achieving the dream of qualifying for the World Cup.”
The Federation President added, “The return of Iraq playing its matches on its home ground and with its fans after its participation in the past events will be a good opportunity to watch the Lions of Mesopotamia up close amidst the warm welcome of the generous audience who are accustomed to reflecting an honorable and bright image.”
He added: “What makes us happy is that Basra is fully prepared to host international matches, as it has the elements of success, such as the quality of the stadiums and the extensive experience it has gained as a result of hosting international matches on several occasions, which have received praise and admiration from the teams that played their matches in Basra stadiums.”
