The Korea Football Association recently sent an official letter to the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) to protect Hwang Hee-chan (Wolverhampton), who was recently subjected to racial discrimination.

The Korea Football Association announced the relevant information on the 18th (Korean time) through the association’s official social network service (SNS).

The Korea Football Association explained, “In an official letter sent to FIFA that day, Hwang Hee-chan expressed serious concerns about the racist behavior he suffered from an opposing team player during a recent practice match.”

He added, “In order to prevent and eradicate racial discrimination in football stadiums, we have requested that FIFA strengthen sanctions against perpetrators.”

Hwang Hee-chan was recently subjected to racial abuse during a friendly match against Como 1907 of Italy’s Serie A.

In response, Hwang Hee-chan stated on his SNS on the 17th, “Racial discrimination is unacceptable not only in sports but in all aspects of life.”

He continued, “After the incident, the coaching staff and teammates kept checking on my situation and told me that I could leave the scene (where the game was being held) if I wanted to,” and expressed his gratitude, saying, “I would like to thank my teammates once again.”

Wolverhampton also announced a club-level response.

However, instead of apologizing, Como stated that it was a misunderstanding and instead released a statement saying that Wolverhampton overreacted and made things worse, which only made the controversy worse.

After the incident, Como uploaded a post on the club’s SNS saying, “I spoke to the person involved, and he said that when he saw Hwang Hee-chan being called ‘Chani’ by his teammates, he said, ‘I think he thinks he’s Jackie Chan. Ignore him. ‘” He added, “I never intentionally said anything disparaging.”

He added: “We are disappointed that this incident has been over-hyped by the reaction of some Wolverhampton players.”

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) also indicated that it could not impose disciplinary action on Como, saying, “The organization’s disciplinary body can only take action on incidents that occur in UEFA competitions.”

Accordingly, it appears that the Korea Football Association has requested FIFA to take proper action to protect national team player Hwang Hee-chan at the association level.

This is the first time that the Korea Football Association has officially raised an issue with FIFA regarding an incident in which a Korean player was subjected to racial discrimination.
