(ANSA) – ASUNCION, MAY 31 – Two weeks before the start of the Copa América, the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) has decided that the regional tournament will not take place in Argentina as it was expected, due to the Covid pandemic- 19. Conmebol herself declared it today on Twitter. “Conmebol informs that, given the current circumstances, it has decided to suspend the organization of the Copa América in Argentina”, reads the statement. The confederation specifies that it is analyzing “the offer of other countries that have expressed interest in hosting the continental tournament”. Among the possible options is Chile, as recently recalled by a Conmebol official, the Argentine Gonzalo Belloso. The Copa América is the most important international competition organized by Conmebol. Argentina should have co-organized the tournament with Colombia, where the social unrest that caused the deaths of dozens of people made it impossible. As for Argentina, the Argentine Minister of Health Carla Vizzotti had recently warned of the difficulties of such an organization as the country of 45 million inhabitants is going through the most critical period of the pandemic, with over 41,000 infected on Thursday alone. For these reasons, according to a poll released on Friday, 70% of Argentines opposed the organization of the Copa América in their country. (HANDLE).
