Two games and already a defeat. The Argentine Mauricio Pochettino experienced his first setback at the helm of the United States, losing against Mexico (2-0), this Tuesday in Guadalajara, in a preparation match for the 2026 World Cup.
Hired last month, the former Tottenham, Paris SG and Chelsea manager made his debut in a 2-0 friendly win against Panama four days ago in Austin, Texas. But with Mexico, the opponent was tougher, and the United States conceded two goals – one in each half – scored by Fulham center forward Raul Jimenez (22nd) and another attacker, César Huerta, in the 49th.
“The journey started just a few days ago”
“We didn’t play well,” commented the 52-year-old coach. “But I think this type of match is perfect for learning… Mexico was a little better and deserved the victory. For us it is a journey that began only a few days ago… We can improve and learn from this performance,” he added.
The “Team USA” coach was deprived of several important players for the occasion, including forwards Tim Weah (Juventus) and Folarin Balogun (Monaco). Compared to the match against Panama, striker Christian Pusilic (Milan) and Weston McKennie (Juventus) were also missing after obtaining permission to join their club in Europe. The United States and Mexico have already qualified for the 2026 World Cup, which they will co-host with Canada.
