The Dutch football legend is getting better. Former Ajax Amsterdam goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, who suffered a brain haemorrhage nearly two weeks ago, has been released from intensive care and hopes to return home next week, he said.

The 52-year-old former Ajax and Manchester United player was vacationing on an island in Croatia when the incident took place. “I am happy to announce that I am no longer in the intensive care unit,” said Edwin Van der Sar on Tuesday evening on his Twitter account. He also posted a photo of himself lying on his hospital bed, holding his wife Annemarie’s arm, the two flashing a smile.

“However, I am still in the hospital. I hope to go home next week and take the next step in my recovery! “, he added.

Edwin van der Sar left his post as general manager of Ajax Amsterdam in May, which he had held since 2016, after the Amsterdam club’s worst season in 14 years. It ended with a third place in the Dutch championship behind Feyenoord Rotterdam and PSV Eindhoven.

Considered one of the best goalkeepers of all time, Van der Sar played for Ajax between 1990 and 1999, winning the Champions League in 1995. He then won the C1 again in 2008 with Manchester United after spells at Juventus Turin and Fulham.
