Former captain of Saint-Étienne and of the France team in the 1960s and 1970s, Georges Bereta died on Tuesday following a long illness at the age of 77, ASSE announced. Born in Saint-Étienne, a few kilometers from the Geoffroy-Guichard stadium, Georges Bereta, who played left winger, played 343 games in the green jersey and scored 68 goals between 1966 and 1974. He was French champion six times and won the Coupe de France three times.

Scorer during historic European evenings for the Greens, such as against Sporting Portugal or Hadjuk Split during the European Cup of Champions Clubs in 1974-1975, the former Stéphanois was twice named “French player of the ‘year’ by France Football (1973, 1974).

In January 1975, he was transferred, against his will, to Marseille where he played 96 games for ten goals, notably winning, once again, the 1976 Coupe de France. He thus missed the famous European epic of the Greens and in had always wanted to the president at the time, Roger Rocher. Georges Bereta was also selected 44 times (4 goals) for the France team, of which he was captain twelve times.

After his career, the Stéphanois returned to live on the scene of his greatest exploits. Still in love with his club, in 1984 he created the Amicale des Anciens Verts and became a member of the club’s Board of Directors. A field bears his name at the Center Sportif Robert-Herbin. It is therefore an ASSE legend who has gone, plunging his heart club into deep sadness.
