Lionel Messi is the biggest star in Major League Soccer, the American championship, there is no doubt about it. Adored by supporters, respected by his teammates and feared by his opponents, the Argentinian did not need much time to establish himself across the Atlantic. But this Thursday, the publication of the salaries of the entire workforce further supported this superstar status. Because the former PSG striker is by far the best paid player, with a fixed salary of almost 12 million euros.
With guaranteed bonuses, this figure climbs even higher. In total, La Pulga is guaranteed to receive more than 19 million euros per year until the end of his contract in 2025. An astronomical sum for this championship which imposes a salary cap, as is the case in the NBA or in the NFL, but far from reality since, thanks to percentages from TV rights and the resale of club jerseys, it should be closer to 50 million euros per year. The second best paid player in the American championship, the Italian Lorenzo Insigne, is far from this amount since he earns “only” 14.5 million euros annually.
The top 10 of this ranking is dominated by well-known figures from the European championships. Besides Messi and Insigne, Xherdan Shaqiri, Javier Hernandez, Federico Bernardeschi, Hector Herrera, Douglas Costa and Christian Benteke are also among the ten highest paid players, with salaries between 7.7 and 4.1 million euros. On the French side, it is Kévin Cabral who receives the highest emoluments with 1.7 million euros.
But it is on the other side of the ranking that it is more surprising. Because many players playing in MLS have to make do with the minimum salary, i.e. 63,730 euros. In the Miami team, four players receive this amount annually, a salary 305x lower than that of Lionel Messi. A world of difference which clearly proves the importance of the Argentinian, whose mere presence must generate quite colossal revenues for the club.
