A turnaround. Three weeks ago, a handful of minutes after the success of Red Star against Saint-Brieuc (2-0) and the failed accession to L 2 (in favor of Concarneau and Dunkirk) coach Habib Beye multiplied the accolades on the lawn of the Bauer stadium which sounded like a farewell. Asked several times about his future at a press conference, the Audonian coach then kicked into touch. “This is not the time to talk about that,” he had harped.

The trend was clearly for a departure despite his contract until June 2024 with the Audonian club. But this Saturday morning, the Red Star announced on its Twitter account that Habib Beye will still be its coach this season with a resumption scheduled for Wednesday June 28.

What happened during these three weeks to finally arrive at this situation? Asked by the Brestois stadium (L 1) during the last winter transfer window, the former OM and Newcastle defender wanted to find a new project this summer. He notably discussed with Sochaux and Amiens (L 2) but that was unsuccessful.

Several other coaches were surveyed

During this time, President Patrice Haddad and sports director Reda Hamache met and surveyed several other coaches, while warning them that they could not yet promise them anything and that it was already to anticipate a possible departure from Beye. In the short list, there were notably Fabien Valéri (Chambly, N 2), Karim Mokeddem (Saint-Brieuc, N.) and Laurent Peyrelade (ex-Rodez, L 2). The first had the preference of part of the club and Steve Marlet (adviser to the president) with whom he had played at Red Star.

But internally, another current favored a more experienced coach. Former Red Star player (1992-2000), where he was trained Fabien Valéri remained on a National climb with Paris 13 Atletico in 2022 before finishing 3rd in his group of N 2 with Chambly this season. He had even freed himself from his last year of contract with the Oisian team to be more easily available to join his former club. But it was not enough.

Need to find an assistant

His discussions with Sochaux and Amiens having failed, Habib Beye therefore resolved to honor his last year of contract. It will be his third on the Red Star bench. After starting as Vincent Bordot’s assistant, he took over from him in September 2021 before finishing 11th in May 2022 then 3rd this season in National. Staying in the Paris region and in National will also allow him to continue his consulting activities at Canal +.

However, he will have to find a new assistant. His staff will indeed be cut off from his deputy Pierre Sage, who has done considerable work alongside him. Sage has just been appointed director of the Olympique Lyonnais training center this week.

On the workforce side, the Red Star has already lost an important player, Noah Cadiou, who signed at Quevilly RM (L 2). But the objective will once again be to find the L 2 left in 2019. The American Josh Wender, owner of 777 Partners who bought the Saint-Ouen club last season, leaving the operational management of the club to Patrice Haddad and to his teams, , may not be satisfied with a new place outside the first two in June 2023…
