Chennai: In connection with the death of football player Priya, a case has been registered against 5 people including four doctors under the new section.

Priya (17) from Pulianthoppu area, Chennai, was a first year student at Queen Mary College. Priya, who was suffering from a torn ligament in her right leg, was operated on at a government hospital in Periyar.

But due to persistent pain, Priya was admitted to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, where her right leg was amputated. In this case, Priya died on the 15th due to kidney and liver damage.

Priya’s father Ravikumar alleged that his daughter’s death was due to wrong treatment. Further, on the basis of his complaint in this regard at Peravallur Police Station, a case was registered under section 174 of the Act for Suspicious Death.

Meanwhile, regarding the death of Priya, in the report submitted by the Director of Medical Education Shanthimalar on the 17th, it was stated that the cause of her death was the lack of medical care given to Priya after the operation at the Periyar Nagar Government Hospital.

It was also reported that the negligence and carelessness of the 5 persons i.e. the operating doctor, the anesthetist, the medical officer on duty, the orthopedic doctor and the medical staff (ward staff) were the reason for the death of the student Priya.

Subsequently, a case has been registered against 5 people under the new section 304 (A) of causing death by negligence under the section of suspicious death and the police are investigating. Out of the 4 doctors under complaint, K. Somasunder and A. Balram Shankar have been dismissed.

In this case, Somasundar and Balram Shankar have filed a petition in the Madras High Court seeking anticipatory bail. It said, “It is unfortunate that the student passed away. We have successfully conducted various surgeries. Many of the people we have operated on are now healthy. We should be granted anticipatory bail as a team of doctors has to appear for investigation in this matter.

We are fully cooperating with the investigation. We will not destroy witnesses. “We promise to accept the court conditions,” it said.

The petition came up for hearing before Justice Jagadish Chandra. Then, the doctor’s lawyer explained about the treatment given to the student. He said, “Two more surgeries were performed on the day of the incident. The patients are in good condition. Now, in the name of investigation, the doctors’ families are being taken to the police station and harassed.

Both the doctors involved are ready to surrender. But, the incident has been politicized and threats are coming. Going to the police station is dangerous,” he said.

Chief Criminal Advocate Asan Muhammad Jinnah, appearing for the police department, submitted that the report of the medical team that investigated the incident has stated that the doctors acted negligently.

Continuing, he said, “The investigation is in the initial stage. Whether the petitioners acted negligently or not will be known only after the investigation. We will file a detailed reply in two weeks.”

The lawyer for the doctors intervened and requested that “no arrest should be made until then”. But the judge refused to accept this and adjourned the case saying that anticipatory bail cannot be granted to the doctors in the current situation.

Action as per fault: Meanwhile, Health Minister M. Subramanian, who spoke to reporters at the Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital in Chennai yesterday, said, “Action will be taken against those who acted negligently and negligently in the matter of student Priya’s death.

However, we do not treat everyone equally. The action will be according to their fault. The medical sector is a large service sector. No doctor knowingly makes a mistake. Mistakes happen due to carelessness. The investigation related to this is going on with external force,” he said.
