jpnn.com – JAKARTA - Barcelona legend Xavi Hernandez believes that Lionel Messi is still the number one footballer in the world today.
The former Spanish national team star admitted that he enjoyed the game of many footballers in the world. “Though, for me, Messi is still number one,” said Xavi on the FIFA website in Jakarta, Thursday (5/12).
Xavi and Messi played with Barcelona from 2004 too 2015.
They both helped Barca win 24 championship titles, including 10 la Liga trophies, four Champions League trophies and two Club World Cup trophies.
Xavi, who moved from Barcelona to Al Sadd in Saudi in 2015, said that Barca during the time he and Messi were active could achieve everything because they had a special generation.
“The difference between Barcelona and the Spanish National Team is Messi. We don’t have a player like Leo (Messi) in the Spanish National Team, a figure who can make a big difference on the pitch,” said the former Barcelona coach.
Xavi is enthusiastically looking forward to the Club World Cup in the United States on 15 June-13 July 2025, which will also be attended by Messi, who plays for Inter Miami.
Xavi considers this competition very interesting because it is attended by clubs from all over the world with different playing styles.
A total of 32 teams are participating in the 2025 Club World Cup, consisting of 12 teams from Europe (UEFA), six from South America (Conmebol), four from Asia (AFC), four from Africa (CAF), four from North, Central America and Caribbean (concacaf), one from Oceania (OFC) and one host representative.
“If you succeed in winning the tournament, you will feel like you are at the top of the world. I have tasted it by winning the World Cup both at club and national team level. It is a great experience to be able to face teams from various parts of the world,” said Xavi.
