Christians and Uighur Muslims living in China are having to deal with increased religious persecution in different ways, intimidation through political speeches being one of them. That’s what the country’s dictator, Xi Jinping, did while fulfilling a local agenda.
Chinese Communist Party (CPC) leader Xi Jinping paid a visit to Xinjiang district, where he gave a speech claiming he wanted to “deepen efforts to control illegal religious activities”.
“Illegal” religious practices in China are all expressions of faith that are not officially sanctioned by the government. In this way, Christians and others who do not submit to state supervision end up being labeled as clandestine by the regime.
During his visit to Xinjiang, the Chinese dictator demanded positive publicity towards the government from the locals, something common in authoritarian regimes. In the country, in addition to worshiping the party, the government also requires limits on religious exposure.
“It remains illegal for anyone under 18 to attend church,” says Open Doors, which ranks China 16th on the world’s list of religious persecution. “The old idea that churches will only be perceived as a threat if they become too large, political or invite outsiders is now an unreliable guideline. “
