Debbie Hewitt will be the head of the English Football Association (FA) from January 2022. This decision was made by the FA selection committee. Mrs Hewitt will be the first woman to hold this position.

“The Commission fully agrees that it has outstanding chairing and management experience across a wide range of business sectors, as well as the proven leadership and character required for this position,” the commission that approved Hewitt’s appointment said in a statement. In addition to her, six more candidates applied for the post.

The FA Council will be asked to formally approve the new chairman at its next meeting on July 22, 2021. Ms. Hewitt will begin her duties in January 2022. Debbie Hewitt is currently serving as Non-Executive Chairman of Visa Europe, BGL Group, Moss Bros Group plc, The Restaurant Group plc and White Stuff Limited and Redrow Group plc. Previously, Ms Hewitt was the Executive Director of the Royal Automobile Club of Great Britain (RAC).

In November 2020, Greg Clark left the post of head of the FA after the scandal. In his speech about racism in football, he used the phrase “footballers of color”, which caused a mixed reaction. Subsequently, Mr. Clarke apologized for his words. Peter McCormick has been named acting chairman of the FA.
