In Britain, thanks to IVF, the first children were born with the genetic material of three parents

The Guardian reports the birth in the UK of the first children from three parents. This became possible after the implementation of a new method of artificial insemination in order to prevent the inheritance of genetic diseases.

In 2015, the British Parliament finally approved a bill allowing artificial insemination using DNA samples from 3 people. As a result, the UK became the first country to implement this practice.

Britain’s Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority (HFEA) confirmed to the publication that “less than five” babies were born in the country, whose parents are three people. For reasons of confidentiality, no further details of these newborns or their parents have been released.

A new IVF method with DNA from three people is being used to prevent the child from developing mitochondrial diseases as a result of inheriting damaged mitochondria from the mother. Such diseases threaten serious disruption of the brain, heart and liver and often lead to early death, the newspaper notes.
