For the first time in Israel: a patient dies from the Omicron variant

A 75-year-old patient who was hospitalized in the Corona ward at Soroka Hospital in Be’er Sheva died yesterday (Monday) after being diagnosed with the Omicron strain, news reports here. He suffered from background illnesses, was vaccinated only twice and it has been more than six months since he received the second vaccine.

A spokeswoman for Soroka Hospital said: “A man in his sixties who was ill in Corona with the Omicron variant died yesterday in hospital. The initial PCR raised the suspicion of the presence of the omicron variant, so the tests were sent for genetic flooring. A positive answer to identify the omicron variant was received yesterday afternoon after his death. We share the family’s grief.

Meanwhile, today the Ministry of Health updated that 170 more verified to Omicron have been identified. To date, 341 verified persons have been identified in Israel, of whom 246 are vaccinated. There is a high suspicion of another 807 cases of exposure to the variant.

In addition, today the Corona Cabinet has been convening for the first time in more than three weeks, with the intention of Prime Minister Bennett and the health system to bring about stricter measures in order to prevent the spread of the Omicron variant in Israel.
