INTERVIEW – The psychologist, famous for popularizing meditation in France, speaks for Le Figaro Santé about the mental suffering that torments many of us today. And advocates lifestyle medicine.

What psychiatrist’s view do you have on this troubled period that we are going through today, in France and throughout the world?

When we are a caregiver, we must be attentive to developments in society, in the family, in human groups such as businesses, schools, etc. since this impacts psychological health. For example, a medical practice today has an important resonance: environmental medicine, which considers the health of patients by integrating data such as water or air pollution, temperature, diet, but also the economic and social context. On the latter, I have my opinion as a citizen, and then my analysis as an expert in mental health.

What I can say is that I have seen a lot of things change in forty years of practicing psychiatry. In particular the decline in confidence in the future, and in institutions. Our elders were convinced that our world, their children, would be better than theirs; it’s the opposite…
