Copa America returns to the United States. This evening (Friday), Conambul, the South American soccer federation, announced that in the summer of 2024 the United States will once again host the competition, eight years after it hosted the Copa Centenario, the centenary edition of the competition held in 2016 and ended with Chile winning.

The 10 teams from South America will of course compete in the Copa America, and they will be joined by six participants from Central and North America who will be determined according to the Nations League of the local association in 2023. That is, the League of Nations of North and Central America will actually also serve as a qualifying tournament for the Copa America.

The return of the Copa America to the United States stems from a broad cooperation agreement agreed upon by the federations in the Americas, as part of the preparations for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada. The one that was originally supposed to host the competition in the summer of 2024 is Ecuador, but due to security and budget problems, it gave up the possibility and the United States will get to host the tournament for the second time in its history.

As you remember, the Argentina team won the Copa America in 2021, when Lionel Messi actually led the Albiceleste to the first title. According to estimates, Messi will also participate in the Cup in 2024 as long as he is fit and it is also possible that this will be his last competition with Argentina.
