/ A report published by The Hill website stated that US President Joe Biden is facing significant criticism from drug advocates for not taking a stronger stance on legalizing marijuana at the federal level.

Although the Biden administration has made some efforts in this regard, such as pardoning individuals convicted of simple marijuana possession and rescheduling marijuana under the Controlled Substances Act, advocates argue that these measures fall short of his campaign promises.

They argue that Biden should de-scheduling marijuana entirely, effectively decriminalizing it, rather than simply easing penalties and restrictions, a change progressive lawmakers in the Senate are pushing for.

A Gallup poll showed that a record 70% of Americans believe marijuana should be legalized, compared with just 19% who oppose it, with advocates saying the issue could attract young voters and African Americans, which Democrats need to boost their support and enthusiasm.

Hayley Matz Medvin, executive vice president of communications, highlights the broad support for marijuana legalization and how it could benefit Biden in the upcoming election.

“Biden’s 2024 rival, former President Donald Trump, is running neck and neck in the polls, with the election coming down to a few thousand voters in swing states,” Medvin said, noting that “Biden’s supporters criticize him for not fully delivering on his promise to decriminalize marijuana and hope to see clear progress on that front.”

Advocates also say Biden’s actions on marijuana reform will indicate whether he is a “modern president,” which could influence voters in key states like Arizona, Michigan, Nevada and Wisconsin.

They stressed the importance of coupling marijuana reform with criminal justice reform and other promises Biden makes to states in general, while also believing that taking bolder action on marijuana legalization could help Biden attract younger voters and make a strong statement on criminal justice reform.
