Un after its creation, the New People’s Ecological and Social Union (Nupes) does not resemble any of the unions tested in the past by the left. We don’t flourish there, we suffer. We don’t discuss, we execute. The conflictuality developed as a political principle by its founder, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, applies with the same rigor to the internal functioning of the coalition as to the external fight waged against its opponents. The atmosphere inevitably suffers.
Ecologists dream only of emancipation and threaten to lead their own list in the European elections of June 2024; the Socialist Party idem, cut in two since in January, the congress of Marseilles saw clashing the opponents to the alliance with Jean-Luc Mélenchon and those who still find it in their interest; at the PCF, Fabien Roussel leads a determined fight against the “rebellious”, settling an old dispute which dates back to the failure of the Left Front in 2016.
At the very heart of the reactor, that is to say at La France insoumise (LFI), the clan war has started between the hardliners who obey the finger and the eye of the founder and those who like François Ruffin succession. Every day, the team threatens to derail without the driving force feeling the need to oil the wheels: the radicalism of the LFI deputies, followers of obstruction, repeated blows and in permanent tension of the institutions, makes many of their partners squirm with unease, without any serious debate on the line having been able to be sketched.
A powerful totem protects Jean-Luc Mélenchon: union. He managed to establish it to his advantage in May 2022 when what remained of the plural left was threatened with disappearance from the benches of the National Assembly and had no other choice but to put themselves under its thumb. Since then, the “rebellious” watch like Arpagon on his treasure by locking the device and throwing opprobrium on all those who sketch a step aside. “The Nupes is in danger if it is not even an electoral agreement anymore”, he has just declared in an interview with 20 Minutes. “If there is no union in the Europeans, there will not be any in the municipal elections either. Why would there be one in the presidential election? », he warns.
Optically effective union
The union is acclaimed by the base. It appears as a powerful antidote to the stab wound carried by Manuel Valls, who had theorized the existence of “two irreconcilable lefts”. The union provides an interesting mass effect because it makes it possible to visualize the tripartition of the political landscape between the Melenchonist left, the Macronist center and the Lepenist right. The union is optically efficient: according to an IFOP-JDD published in mid-May and relating to voting intentions in the European elections, a single list of the Nupes would be on par with that of the National Rally, far ahead of that of Renaissance.
