It is a shocking proposal which refers to a measure which was in place for 18 years (until 1968). In an interview given to our colleagues at 20 Minutesthe president (LR) of the Île-de-France region, Valérie Pécresse, said she wanted to “create a regional minimum wage for the Ile-de-France region”.

The former right-wing candidate in the last presidential election proposes raising the level of the minimum wage by 9%. “The level of consumer prices in Île-de-France is 9% higher than the rest of France. An employee paid the minimum wage who rents a studio in Créteil (Val-de-Marne) costs him 51% of his income while it would cost him 25% in Limoges,” illustrates the boss of the Ile-de-France region.

She defends a “remainder to live” which is not the same for a resident of the Paris region. An observation which, according to her, would be “a problem for essential workers, who cannot find housing in Île-de-France”. And the elected official clarified that it is more particularly state agents who would be most impacted. “The State must understand that it cannot pay public officials at the same rate in Paris as elsewhere,” insists President LR.

A much higher cost of living, according to INSEE

If she does not comment on a possible overpopulation effect that such a measure could cause in a region already impacted by the housing crisis, Valérie Pécresse wants a discussion with the social partners on this subject. “Is it normal, worthy and admissible to import essential workers from other regions – from Oise, from Eure-et-Loir, even from Eure – because they cannot find accommodation in Île-de-France? » she finishes.

If the regional president mentions “the cost of living is 8.8% more in Île-de-France”, we do not know where she gets this data from, a very recent INSEE study figures well these higher prices, on a daily basis, for the inhabitants of the “Paris region” (not the whole of Île-de-France).

“In 2022, the general level of consumer prices in the Paris region is 7% higher than that of the rest of mainland France (…) The difference is concentrated in rents, 40% higher than those in the province ( before deduction of housing aid) with comparable housing characteristics”, writes the statistics institute in particular. Without forgetting post-food (+7.2%), clothing (+6%) and even health (+3.6%). As a reminder, until 1968, the level was divided into 20 zones or regions to better adapt to prices.
