Press releases and resignations are multiplying among the actors and actresses of Spanish football. The latest was posted by La Roja men’s coach Luis de la Fuente on Saturday on X (formerly Twitter). The coach in office since the departure of Luis Enrique after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar has taken a stand against Luis Rubiales, attacked from all sides for his forced kiss on Jenni Hermoso, during the World Cup final, but who refuses to resign.
“I want to express my absolute revulsion at any act of gender-based violence. There is no room for lukewarm attitudes when it comes to dealing with this type of situation,” de la Fuente said. The Spanish coach however applauded the speech of Luis Rubiales, during the exceptional meeting of the RFEF (Spanish Football Federation), this Friday, when the latter hammered that he would not resign. Alongside Jorge Vilda, coach of the women’s team (much of whose staff resigned on Saturday), we saw de la Fuente acquiesce in the defense of the president of the RFEF.
Since then, the FIA has temporarily relieved Rubiales of his duties, and the coach has changed his mind: “I deeply condemn the events that have occurred and, in particular, that they have diverted attention from what is really important. : the unprecedented feat achieved by Spanish women’s football, of which we should all be very proud”.
Xavi, the FC Barcelona coach, also expressed his disagreement with the act of Rubiales, at a press conference this Saturday, saying to himself “sad that we are not talking about the victory in the World Cup, a historic event for our sport, and that we talk about this intolerable behavior”.
