The Ontario plant in Oakville, which was supposed to manufacture electric vehicles within four years, will finally be converted this summer to return to production of Super Duty gasoline trucks, Ford announced Thursday.

Unionized Unifor workers said they were relieved because there was uncertainty about electric vehicle manufacturing. Postponing the project from 2025 to 2027 could mean thousands of layoffs, according to them.

Ford will invest $2.3 billion in the region, which would help keep 2,000 jobs, according to Ontario Premier Doug Ford.

“We have reached an agreement that will allow our members to return to work faster, but will also protect their jobs for the future,” said Lana Payne, National President of Unifor.

“The decision to add to Oakville production up to 100,000 units of his best seller “Super Duty is expanding production of this vehicle at three plants in North America, including the Kentucky Truck Plant and the Ohio Assembly Plant, which are operating at full capacity,” Ford said.

Work from the summer

Ford will work at the factory throughout the summer to install the tooling and equipment needed to build the Super Duty.

After that, over the next ten years, an electrified version could see the light of day, which emphasizes the union.

Remember that Ford has a project in Quebec at the heart of the Bécancour battery sector.

At the end of May, construction of the $1.2 billion Ford Ecopro plant began after a pause related to issues related to the composition of the cathodes.
