Ford Motor has named its upcoming midsize electric truck the Fathom, setting a base price of $28,350 alongside a $1,595 destination charge. Pre-orders for the five-passenger vehicle open early next year, with the first customer deliveries scheduled to begin later in 2027 at the Louisville Assembly Plant.
Naming the Fathom and Decoding the Target Buyer
Choosing the name for Ford’s upcoming electric midsize truck took a nine-month evaluation process. Executives rejected historical archive choices like the Galaxie, Taurus, and Ranchero because each came with specific implications that did not fit the new electric platform.
Instead, two Ford copywriters independently brought forward the winning title. Kay Hart, general manager of the Ford Model e division, explained the linguistic roots in a company blog post, noting that the word carries layered historical meaning.
“Long before it meant depth, fathom described the span of a person’s outstretched arms, roughly six feet. Sailors borrowed that span to measure water they couldn’t see the bottom of. And eventually the word came to mean something else entirely: to understand a thing completely.”

Hart emphasized that the target buyer’s mindset required a shift away from traditional truck specifications. That owner’s motivations, she wrote, look a little different from the traditional truck customer’s, and defining them guided every decision on the first vehicle built on our Universal EV Platform. Which meant the name had to do more than sound good. It had to capture a mindset, shifting the focus from specs to a spirit of adaptability.

The base Fathom carries a starting price of $28,350, which climbs to $29,945 once a $1,595 destination and delivery charge is added, according to CNBC reporting on the Louisville assembly plans. This pricing strategy puts the electric truck near the $30,000 threshold that executives previously promised for the automaker’s next-generation battery-powered lineup.

To achieve this price point while including a full suite of features, Ford is relying on volume manufacturing across a completely redesigned production framework. Vehicles built on the Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform depart from the traditional moving assembly line introduced by Henry Ford in 1913, utilizing parallel assembly lines for the front, rear, and middle sections before final consolidation at the Louisville plant.
Features, Technology, and Market Rivalry
Unlike feature-stripped upstart vehicles designed purely for utility, the Ford Fathom aims for broad consumer appeal with interior volume surpassing a Toyota RAV4, an open bed, a front trunk, and seating for five adults. Competitors like the upcoming Slate Truck omit basic modern niceties such as paint, touchscreens, and back seats to reach a lower entry price, whereas the Fathom comes equipped with advanced digital integrations.

Every model will also feature the hardware necessary for BlueCruise, Ford’s Level 2+ hands-free highway driving assistant, though utilizing the subscription service will cost extra. For reference, BlueCruise is priced at $2,495 as a one-time purchase or $495 annually.
While Ford has not yet released final battery specifications, the truck is expected to support drivers who need 300 miles of range.
