The European market will have to be more patient for the arrival of the electric Ford Explorer. The SUV built in Cologne (Germany) will arrive in dealerships in mid-2024instead of in January, as originally planned.

A spokesman for the brand stated that the reason was due to the European regulation ECE-R 100.3, which establishes stricter parameters for the performance and safety of zero-emission vehicle batteries.

“We are in favor of the new standard because it is in line with our philosophy of delivering high quality and safe electric vehicles to all our customers around the world. This means that deliveries of the new electric Explorer will be made from the summer of 2024”, he stated.

The blue oval brand’s electrification goals are more ambitious in Europe than in its native United States and it aims to make its range of passenger cars fully electric by 2025, ten years before the date set by the European Commission as the end of internal combustion engines.

As of that date, in the Old Continent it will be possible to continue selling thermal engines as long as they work exclusively with synthetic fuels neutral in CO2 emissions, a decision that focuses on the production and infrastructure of this type of fuel.

The electric Explorer is the fruit of cooperation between Ford and the Volkswagen Group and uses the latter’s MEB modular architecture, which it also shares with the Volkswagen ID.4. It is also anticipated that a coupe SUV will be produced later on with the ID.5 platform and components.

The Cologne factory is responsible for assembling Ford models with the MEB skeleton. For the next generation of zero-emission cars from the American brand, a new platform will be used, for which factories such as the Spanish one in Almussafes are being prepared. Its deliveries are expected from 2025.

The Explorer, premiere in Spain

Despite the fact that the SUV will not reach Spanish dealers until the summer of 2024, the first unit has already been seen in Spain. Specifically, it appeared at the Starlite Gala in Marbella, last Sunday, August 13.

According to the brand, which celebrates 14 editions as a sponsor of the charity event, the new Explorer “marks the way towards the complete reinvention of the Ford brand in Europe.” At the gala, the actor Antonio Banderas expressed his admiration for the SUV: “I love it, for years I have been using an electric car and I like the convenience of recharging it at home and the feeling when driving.”
