Foreign direct investment (FDI) in Latin America and the Caribbean reached the figure of 224,579 million dollars (204,467 million euros) in 2022, which represents a growth of 55.2% compared to the previous year, and the highest record top of the historical series.

According to figures from the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (Cepal) in a July report, the result is largely explained by the performance offered by various economies in the region, especially Brazil.

Likewise, growth in investment has also been observed in areas such as the services sector. The growth of this investment has meant, in turn, that its weight in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the region grows up to 4% of the total.

Of course, the economic body of United Nations He also points out that the dynamics of last year is “congruent” with the post-pandemic recovery, so it is “not clear” that these records will remain at similar levels in 2023.

The executive secretary of ECLAC, José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, valued the data for 2022 during the presentation of the report, but stressed the importance of ensuring that the “challenge” is not only to attract and retain this foreign investment, but also to maximize the contribution of this to the development of countries.

“For this, countries must pay attention to post-establishment productive development policies,” explained the senior United Nations official, to detail that these policies refer, among other points, to the promotion of value chains, the development human resources, infrastructure and logistics, and building local capacities.
