Foreign Minister: “Time runs out for agreement with Iran”

Germany’s foreign minister has warned that “time is running out to revive the nuclear deal with Iran”, said in the wake of talks in Vienna to try to revive the 2015 nuclear deal

Iran has taken a tougher stance in recent days, raising new demands, including removing all U.S. sanctions imposed on Iran after 2018 at once, before narrowing its renewed nuclear program.

“Time is running out,” German Foreign Minister Annalna Barbock told reporters in Liverpool, England, where G7 foreign ministers met. “It seems in recent days that we have no progress.”

Barbuk, chairwoman of the Green Party, said Iran had resumed talks with a position that brought negotiations back six months, the current round of talks in Vienna following a five-month hiatus following the appointment of Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi. U.S. officials said Secretary of State Anthony Blinken had a “productive” meeting with colleagues from Britain, Germany and France on Friday, and discussed talks with Iran.

President Raisi said on Saturday that Tehran was serious about its nuclear talks in Vienna, all reported by Iran’s official IRNA news agency, but Iranian media insisted that Iran had not softened its stance and remained with the positions it offered after the resumption of talks on November 29.

Indirect talks between the US and Iran are being held by diplomats from France, Britain, Germany, Russia and China, who are sending messages between them because Tehran refuses to establish direct contact with Washington.
