The export of Russians from Kazakhstan, where riots broke out against the backdrop of protests at the beginning of the year, is being completed, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) reported in its Telegram channel.

This decision was made against the background of the stabilization of the situation in the republic, the ministry explained. In addition, as of today, passenger flights to Russia from the international airport in Alma-Ata have resumed.

Earlier, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that on January 9 and 10, 1,697 people were taken from Kazakhstan to Russia. In particular, on January 10, military transport aircraft of the Ministry of Defense delivered 250 people to Moscow from Alma-Ata and Nur-Sultan. Among them were also foreign citizens: six Hungarians, five Austrians and a number of Kazakhs studying in Russian universities.

On January 2, unrest began in western Kazakhstan amid a sharp increase in prices for liquefied gas. Then rallies began to take place in other large cities of the republic. Soon the demonstrations escalated into armed clashes with the police and looting. The protesters made several attempts to storm administrative buildings and police departments, and also briefly captured the old presidential residence and the international airport in Alma-Ata.

President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev estimated the economic damage to the country from the riots at about $2-3 billion. The head of state introduced a state of emergency in the republic until January 19, replaced the first president of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, as chairman of the Security Council, and asked his CSTO partners to help in resolving the situation. According to the president, the riots were organized by international terrorist groups, including those from Afghanistan.

In this regard, CSTO peacekeepers were brought into Kazakhstan. On January 11, Tokayev announced that the situation was stabilizing. On January 13, the withdrawal of peacekeepers from the republic began.
