A foreign national shot dead two people at Moldova’s main international airport on Friday after being denied entry into the country, according to authorities. The incident occurred at Chisinau International Airport, the largest airport in the east European country.

Police were able to detain the assailant after the attack. “At this moment, the danger has been eliminated. The aggressor was wounded and is being treated,” stated the police on Facebook. Following the incident, there was a brief delay but flights have now resumed.

Reports indicate that the arriving passenger had flown in from Turkey and had used a firearm against the border guards. Moldova’s Newsmaker website cited unnamed officials saying that the man had seized a gun from a border police officer after being taken to an area for denial of entry. It was during this encounter that the man opened fire.

Moldova, a country with a population of 2.6 million, gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 and is currently seeking to join the European Union. It is located between Romania and Ukraine.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the motives behind the attack and are taking measures to ensure the safety and security of the airport and its passengers.
