After the deadly bear attack in Trentino, the German Foreign Office in Berlin is checking whether travel to South Tyrol is safe for citizens of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Bolzano – The German honorary consul in Bolzano, the lawyer Gerhard Brandstätter, reported to the TV station Rai that he had received a corresponding request from Berlin and subsequently sent the information about the incidents to the German consulate in Milan. He also established contacts between the German authorities and the state authorities in South Tyrol. In April, in South Tyrol’s neighboring province of Trentino, a female bear fatally attacked a jogger.

According to Brandstätter, concerned holidaymakers had asked the consulate whether a trip to South Tyrol was still safe due to the bear problem. This is also due to false reports in which there was talk of 100 bears in South Tyrol, while only three bears were found in the predominantly German-speaking northern Italian province. From time to time bears from neighboring Trentino also roamed through South Tyrol.

Travel warning for South Tyrol after a deadly bear attack: “Bears are no risk to the population”

The state of South Tyrol informed the South Tyrolean daily newspaper on Friday: “The three bears are constantly being observed and monitored by the forest authority. These bears are not problem animals and therefore do not pose an increased risk to the population.” According to stol.it, the country is trying to prevent an “overreaction” from Berlin, according to the responsible state councilor Arnold Schuler: “I can’t imagine that a travel warning will be issued.”

In any case, there has not been a wave of cancellations in South Tyrol because of the bears, says the South Tyrolean tourism boss Hansi Pichler to the portal. But he warns: “The bear is an issue in tourism. We have to find solutions because, in the long run, large carnivores are a problem for the destination.”
