The Ecuadorian Risk Secretariat reported that a forest fire in the southern Andes of Ecuador, which began almost a week ago, left three people injured and destroyed 3,877 hectares of pine forest and grasslands.
Authorities reported that the incident, in the town of Quilanga, also affected three homes and a poultry farm. The area with the greatest damage includes a municipal conservation area that houses unique species of flora and fauna.
In response to the emergency, the government mobilized soldiers and firefighters from three provinces to control the situation.
Likewise, organizations such as the Secretariat of Communication of the presidency highlighted that the fire “seriously affects” Quilanga, a small town dedicated to coffee cultivation.
Ecuador is currently working to combat 12 forest fires, which are being monitored. One of these, which started on Cerro del Carmen in the port of Guayaquil, is beginning to pose a threat to local media outlets, including Teleamazonas, which reports that the fire threatens residents as well as canal activities.
