This Saturday, September 28, the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) reported on the persistence of forest fires in Colombian territory.

In total, there are 8 active fires affecting the departments of Cauca, Huila, Nariño and Valle del Cauca, with a balance of 1,165 hectares affected to date.

The department of Cauca is the most affected by the fires, with five active outbreaks distributed in the municipalities of Inzá, Patía, La Vega and Mercaderes. Huila, for its part, reports a fire in the municipality of Aipe, while in Nariño the flames are concentrated in San Lorenzo, and in Valle del Cauca, in the municipality of Riofrío.

Despite the seriousness of the situation in these departments, authorities have made significant progress in containing other fires. In the municipalities of Pesca (Boyacá), Los Andes (Nariño) and Bojacá (Cundinamarca), the flames have been successfully extinguished. In addition, the Government of Tolima confirmed the complete liquidation of the fire in Natagaima, which lasted for 19 consecutive days. However, constant monitoring will be maintained during the weekend, and the closure of the Unified Command Post (PMU) is expected on September 30.

To confront the fires that are still active, the UNGRD has deployed a series of resources and personnel in the affected areas. Currently, an aircraft specialized in extinguishing fires is in operation, along with 30 firefighting units, 39 members of the BRIAD of the National Army, 11 units of the National Police (POLSANAR) and 21 of the Colombian Civil Defense.

The authorities have called on the population to remain alert and collaborate with prevention measures, since climatic conditions and drought continue to be factors that favor the spread of flames in different regions of the country.
