Firefighters were unable to stop the advance of forest fires to military installations in central Greece.

As Day.Az reports with reference to Euronews, powerful explosions were heard off the coast of the Aegean Sea in Greece in the area of the Volos air force base, engulfed in fire. As a result of wildfires, ammunition depots were destroyed here. Personnel and F-16 aircraft were taken to another base in advance. The fire brigade announces the evacuation of 12 settlements. According to official figures, no one was seriously injured from the detonation of ammunition.

The fire in the area of the city of Volos is considered one of the most dangerous of the 124 wildfires that emergency services are fighting in Greece. Including regions that depend on tourism are suffering: the evacuation of visitors turns into disastrous consequences for local businesses.

The government insists that most resorts in Greece are safe enough for tourists. The situation in the country has remained critical for more than ten days. Natural fires were recorded in almost half of the regions. In Rhodes alone, tens of thousands of people have been evacuated from disaster zones.
