Why words “die out”

There are a variety of reasons why certain terms fall out of our language or are forgotten. There is often a gradual process behind it.

The fast pace of today’s world is driving developments forward at full speed, so that some words simply fall out of use and become obsolete.

Here’s an example: Because calls couldn’t be forwarded automatically to a dialed number in the past, there was the so-called lady from the office: a telephone operator who forwarded the caller to the person being called by plugging together various wires.

This approach is of course long outdated, which means that the term is no longer used.

Social change also causes words to disappear. Nowadays, no student is put in a university prison, the so-called Karzer.

Some terms also fall victim to political change – including the penny, which lost in importance after the introduction of the euro.

So some terms disappear for a good reason, while others are so funny that they could be brought back to life!
