A ‘National Commission of Inquiry’ has been formed to investigate allegations of torture, firing, violence, death, mass arrests and human rights violations surrounding the quota movement. Two presidents and member-secretaries have been appointed in this commission. Former Judge of the Appellate Division. Abdul Matin and lawyer and human rights activist Sultana Kamal will jointly chair the duties. Dhaka University teacher Tanjimuddin Khan and author-researcher Maha Mirza will jointly serve as member secretary.

This information was informed in a notice sent to the media on Monday (July 28). Member Secretary Tanjimuddin Khan and Maha Mirza sent this notification.

According to the circular, on July 16, the students were severely beaten to suppress the anti-discrimination student movement in the Dhaka University area. Abu Saeed was shot directly in the chest in Rangpur when students and common people across the country took to the streets to protest this violence.

But when the police file a case, the common students and public are blamed. This has raised questions in the minds of ordinary citizens about the entire investigation process and demands to reveal the truth in these incidents. According to the newspaper, at least 209 people died in this incident, but according to the government, it was 147.

Incidentally, the official death toll has increased to 150, the Home Minister said in the cabinet today.

The notification further states that attempts have been made to control the students involved in this movement by means of torture, firing and mass arrests, and there have been allegations of gross violations of the constitution, customary laws and human rights.

Therefore, there is a need to find out the cause of these incidents, fair investigation and trial. As a part of this, a ‘National Commission of Inquiry’ has been constituted by some eminent persons of Bangladesh from teachers, lawyers, cultural activists and general parents of the country.

The members of the commission are former judges of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court. Abdul Mateen, lawyer and human rights activist Sultana Kamal, senior lawyer ZI Khan, senior journalist Abu Syed Khan, Professor Geeti Ara Nasreen, senior journalist Ashraf Qaiser, lawyer Aneek R Haque, Professor Tanjimuddin Khan and writer and researcher Maha Mirza.

Apart from this, Supreme Court senior lawyer Tobarak Hossain, lawyer Sara Hossain, Shahdeen Malik, writer and educationist Professor Salimullah Khan, teacher Kazi Mahfuzul Haque Supon, lawyer Rashna Imam, lawyer Jyotirmoy Barua and teacher Saimum Reza Talukdar will be advisers in the Public Inquiry Commission.

On behalf of the National Inquiry Commission, all aware persons will be requested to send all the information related to the various violent tortures, persecutions, murders, shootings, threats, lawsuits, human rights violations, etc., which have taken place since July 1, centered on the anti-discrimination student movement, to the commission.

It has been mentioned in the notification that any kind of information including audio, video, photograph, text can be sent.
