The decision to withhold the memoirs of former Indian Army Chief General MM Naravane has caused controversy in New Delhi. In the book, General Naravane claimed that during the 2020 Galwan conflict, the political leadership failed to provide proper orders and instructed the army to act on its own. Additionally, there was not enough discussion regarding Agnipath recruiting.

Following an interview with General Naravane in which he revealed these details, the National Security Department requested that the book be examined and banned its publication until the investigation is complete. While army personnel are generally allowed to publish books after retirement, there are restrictions on writing about intelligence and security matters. It is customary to resolve such issues informally, but in this case, the government seems to have taken a more stringent approach.

Prior to this controversy, books by army chiefs have not caused such uproar, but those by officers of lower rank have. In 2007, Major General VK Singh, who had served in the Research and Analysis Wing, faced a case under the Official Secrets Act after revealing intelligence irregularities in a book. Similarly, Major General Arjun Ray faced intervention from the army headquarters when his book on the Kashmir issue caused concerns about his promotion to the rank of general.

As the inspection of General Naravane’s book continues, it remains to be seen how this controversy will be resolved and whether the book will be published in the near future.
