Sweden will prosecute two Iranian-Swedish brothers who were arrested in 2021 after being accused of spying for Iran’s intelligence agencies. Their trial will not be open to the public, the lawyers of the two brothers have claimed so far that their clients are innocent

In Sweden, two Iranian-Swedish citizens will be prosecuted for the crime of espionage, the Swedish newspaper Akpressen reported.

The district court in Stockholm last Thursday began planning a meeting with the prosecutors and defense attorneys for the upcoming trial. The details of the case against them are not particularly clear as the prosecutors have commented very little on the nature of the allegations.

Official indictments against the two are expected to be published in the coming months and their trial will not be open to the public. Lawyers for both brothers have so far maintained that their clients are innocent.

The two brothers, who were born in Iran but came to Sweden as children in 1994, are accused of espionage activities from March 2011 until their arrest in September and November last year, and are currently being held in strict isolation in a prison in the city of Kronoberg.

The Swedish newspaper did not mention their names, but earlier reports at the time of their arrest revealed their identities as Fayman Kya, now 42, and his brother Fayam, 35. The older of the two worked as an investigator at the Department of Defense (SÄPO) and also worked for the Military Intelligence and Inspection Office (KSI). , one of Sweden’s most secretive intelligence agencies. The younger brother also worked for SÄPO for a short period.

Tensions are relatively high between Iran and Sweden due to the sentence of a Swedish court on former Iranian Hamid Nouri who was sentenced to life imprisonment in Sweden for the executions of political prisoners in 1988 while he was a police officer in Iran and was arrested last year in Sweden.
