The rock band Bon Jovi mourns the loss of a founding member: bassist Alec John Such. The 70-year-old contributed significantly to the formation of the band, but then left. Only through him does the band want to have found each other at all.

The bassist died at the age of 70, as singer Jon Bon Jovi announced on Twitter on Sunday. “Alec was always wild and full of life,” the band said on their website and social media on Sunday. Nothing was initially known about the cause of death.

Keyboarder David Bryan, who founded the band in 1983 with singer Jon Bon Jovi, drummer Tico Torres and guitarists Dave Sabo, Richie Sambora and Such, paid tribute to the deceased on Twitter: “It was an honor and a pleasure, the stage and life to share with you,” the musician wrote.

Such shared the stage with Bon Jovi from 1983 to 1994 as the band filled stadiums around the world. The musicians from New Jersey “found their way to each other” through bassist Such, wrote Bon Jovi on Twitter. Such was a childhood friend of drummer Tico Torres and brought Richie Sambora to the band’s gigs before he joined Bon Jovi as a guitarist.

Bon Jovi were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017. Such and Sambora, who left the band in 2013, reunited with the other band members for the 2018 induction ceremony. “When Jon Bon Jovi called me many years ago and asked me to play in his band, I quickly realized how serious he was and that he had a vision,” Such said at the time. “I am overjoyed to have been part of this vision.”

The band rose to fame in the 1980s with hits like “Runaway”, “Livin’ on a Prayer”, “You Give Love a Bad Name” and “Wanted Dead or Alive”. Such split from the group in 1994 but was with the band in 2018 when the band Bon Jovi was inducted into the US Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
