Carlos Pólit’s lawyers have asked the US District Court for the Southern District of Florida to allow him to pay bail of $25 million and remain under house arrest until September 4, when his sentence will be determined on six charges of money laundering.

In a brief filed on July 17, 2024, the defense responded to objections from the Department of Justice, which opposes Pólit’s release on the grounds of flight risk.

Pólit, 73, has been in prison since April 23, on charges of: money laundering, money laundering conspiracy and the transaction of property derived from crimes.

The defense argues that there is no risk of flight, given that Ecuador and Italy, countries of which Polit is a citizen, have extradition treaties with the United States. In addition, most of his family resides in the United States.

According to Ecuavisa, Judge Kathleen Williams must decide on the request for bail and also respond to two other requests from the defense: the annulment of the trial or the granting of an acquittal.
