He joined the renewed Foreign Service shortly after the independence of the Republic of Latvia was restored. He was the leading specialist of the Political Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the affairs of Eastern European countries from 1991 to 1992, later the head of the Eastern European department and also the director of the department.

Daukšts was sent to work at the Latvian Embassy in Austria in 1995. From 1995 to 1996, he also performed the duties of a temporary authorized clerk in Hungary.

During his career as a diplomat, Daukšts was the permanent representative of Latvia at the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, the first secretary at the permanent representation of Latvia at the OSCE, as well as an adviser at the Latvian embassy in Lithuania.

After completing his diplomatic service, Daukšts turned to academic activity – he was the vice-president of the Baltic and Nordic History and Politics Research Center, the vice-chairman of the board of the Latvian Occupation Research Society, as well as a member of the board of the Public Memory Center from 2016. His poetry is also published in Latvian periodicals.
