The former director of protection of the defunct Administrative Department of Security (DAS), retired colonel of the National Police Manuel Antonio González Henríquez, has been arrested for alleged participation in the murder of former presidential candidate Carlos Pizarro Leongómez.

According to sources from the Attorney General’s Office, González Henríquez would have unexpectedly modified Pizarro’s security schemethus facilitating the execution of the criminal plan that culminated in his murder on April 26, 1990, on a flight from Bogotá to Barranquilla.

The former officer was formally linked as allegedly responsible for the crimes of homicide for terrorist purposes, conspiracy to commit a crime, and illegal possession of weapons or ammunition for the exclusive use of the Armed Forces.. As a result, the measure of preventive detention in his place of residence has been imposed on him, in accordance with the provisions of Law 600.

During his period as protection director of the DAS between 1989 and 1990, González Henríquez was in charge of coordinating the protection schemes for presidential candidates. and senior state officials. It is presumed that, taking advantage of this position, he made unforeseen changes and rotations in Pizarro’s security personnel, which would have facilitated the fulfillment of the criminal plan.

“In that sense, he must comply with a measure to ensure preventive detention at the place of residence, in accordance with the provisions of Law 600 (former Penal System),” explained the Prosecutor’s Office.
