The former Minister of Energy, Andrea Arrobo, facing impeachment for the energy crisis in the country, has responded publicly to the accusations leveled against her by President Daniel Noboa, who accused her of sabotage. Arrobo has flatly denied having acted with inaction during her administration and has detailed the underlying causes of the crisis in the electricity sector.
Since his dismissal on April 16, 2024, Arrobo has been under tax investigation for alleged prevarication of public service. In his defense, Arrobo has asked the Oversight Commission of the National Assembly to prevent politics from contaminating the ongoing criminal process. He has expressed his intention not to make public statements that could affect said process.
With an outstanding technical career of more than 10 years in the energy field, Arrobo emphasizes his experience and technical knowledge in the matter. He claims not to consider himself a political figure and has expressed his responses from a technical perspective.
Arrobo has provided detailed information on energy imports during his administration, highlighting the need to decree “rationing” to face demand, especially given the situation in neighboring countries such as Peru and Panama.
In terms of electricity generation, Arrobo has noted the incorporation of additional generation capacity and the efforts made to maintain and recover critical facilities. Highlights the maintenance and contingency programs implemented to strengthen the national electrical infrastructure.
Finally, he emphasized that his work focused on the long term “so that the country’s energy system is resilient to the aspects of climate change.”
He assures that he had no intention of harming the Government, as President Daniel Noboa maintained. And that he has already given his version to the Prosecutor’s Office.
«The adverse circumstances, added to the structural failures, have led to information being distorted and the Ministry’s management questioned. Regarding the legal process, my version and all the information is in the file of the State Attorney General’s Office.
The former minister concludes her statement by reiterating her willingness to collaborate with the authorities to clarify the facts and to guarantee transparency in the management of the energy crisis.
