(ANSA) – PERUGIA, SEPTEMBER 28 – Some of the patients who over the years have undertaken a treatment path in the Umbrian capital have also returned to Perugia from Basilicata and Sicily, with the support of the Daniele Chianelli Committee. On the occasion of the conference “Return to life. 34 years of commitment in favor of oncohaematological patients”, organized by the Committee in the Sala dei Notari, some shared their testimony, thanking the staff of the residence, of the Santa Maria della Misericordia hospital and the city.
“Returning to Perugia? As if you were in a second family where you feel at home,” Pietro, who comes from Sicily, told ANSA. “We owe everything to the Residence, to the doctors who looked after us with the maximum of their abilities, always with humanity in the difficult moment in which we face the path.
They are special,” he added.
Francesco, who lives in Basilicata, Perugia, met her in 2016. “Eight years have passed – he underlined – and I feel at home, the Committee is a family like the people I met during this journey”. A “difficult and full of pitfalls” path in which, he says, “the fact that we were all under the roof of the residence and the presence of the other patients allowed it to be less hard”. In those months he also met the person who became his life partner. “That summer a family arrived from Calabria – Francesco recalled -, there was Elvira who I continued to talk to after returning home”. In a difficult moment in life “there was not only suffering and pain, but also this gift that brings me so much joy”.
Like others, Francesco underlined that “the path has largely led to a cure, but also that even today leukemia and blood cancers are a tough time”. Hence an appeal: “Continue investing in research. I am alive thanks to drugs that didn’t exist 10 years earlier, I had a few more chances.”
On the sidelines of the conference, Franco Chianelli underlined the value of friendships born over the years. “On a particular day – he underlined – we talk about pediatric oncohematology, children, adults and the elderly, but the most important thing is the testimonies. They came here to thank for what is done in Perugia, for the exceptional results we obtain, because it remains a friendship and they continue to help us.”
What the Committee has achieved over the years “is also thanks to those who come from outside Umbria”.
Among the many interventions also that of the mayor Vittoria Ferdinandi, who met the patients. “They told me – he highlighted – that they feel at home despite that being a period of very important struggles and pain, a sign that Perugia was able to welcome them in the best possible way thanks to the Committee”.
