Jeddah: A former member of the Council of Senior Scholars in Saudi Arabia has said that it is not wrong for a Muslim to celebrate any special occasion, such as the birthday of himself or his loved ones. Said Khais bin Mohammed Al Sheikh Mubarak.

He also said that celebrations are not wrong when it comes to anniversaries, one’s achievements or children’s achievements, graduation from university, or other high – level achievements. These celebrations are basically permissible as they are not banned on the basis of any religious scripture.

Such occasions are considered part of traditions and customs. They have nothing to do with religious prohibitions. They are not forbidden in the Qur’an or in the traditions of the Prophet or in any religious book. Said Khais bin Mohammed Al Sheikh Mubarak.

Scholars have unanimously agreed that a new form of worship should be forbidden, other than the one prescribed in the Holy Qur’an and the Prophet’s action. Al-Mubarak pointed out that such celebrations do not fall into the category of religious observances in Islam that are not permissible to add or remove anything.

There is nothing wrong with Muslims remembering the Prophet’s Hijrah as an opportunity for a reminder and guidance in their daily lives. Al-Mubarak said.
