Former Myanmar adviser Aung San Suu Kyi jailed for 6 years in 4 corruption cases

Yangon : Myanmar’s former government adviser Aung San Suu Kyi has been sentenced to 6 more years in prison in 4 corruption cases.

The National Democratic League coalition led by Aung San Suu Kyi, who fought against the military regime in Myanmar and won the Nobel Peace Prize, took power in the last election in 2020. Suu Kyi served as an adviser to the government.

However, the military overthrew the government in February last year on allegations of electoral fraud and regained power. Suu Kyi was placed under house arrest. Aung San Suu Kyi faces 11 charges of inciting rebellion against the military, breaking official rules and engaging in corruption. The investigation in this regard was going on in the Myanmar court.

A Myanmar court sentenced Aung San Suu Kyi to 4 years in prison last December on charges of inciting rebellion against the army and violating the Corona regulations.

In this case, there was an investigation into some corruption cases against Aung San Suu Kyi. Judgment was given. According to a judicial official, Aung San Suu Kyi has been sentenced to another 6 years in prison. One of Suu Kyi’s lawyers said the hearings in the corruption cases were held behind closed doors and journalists, the public and Aung San Suu Kyi’s lawyers were not allowed.

He has been sentenced to 6 years imprisonment in total 4 cases. Cases were filed against him including using his authority to rent out government land to the public below the market price and building a house using the funds given to the foundation.

In 4 cases he has been sentenced to 3 years imprisonment each. The court has ordered that the punishment received in 3 cases should be served concurrently and the punishment received in the fourth case should be served in the subsequent period. Following this, he received an additional 6-year prison sentence. Aung San Suu Kyi has denied the allegations. His lawyers said they would appeal the sentence.
