Former NFL Defensive End Allen Bailey Dies at 37

Allen Bailey, a defensive end who built a 10-season NFL career primarily with the Kansas City Chiefs and Atlanta Falcons, has died at the age of 37 after being found dead by his wife at their Florida home on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.

Family Confirms Former Defender Passes Away at 37

Bailey’s brother, Alford Bailey Jr., stated that the player’s wife discovered him inside their Florida residence, and the family believes he died from natural causes, though no official cause of death has been publicly released. Family members confirmed the passing of the former defensive standout on Tuesday.

Standing 6 feet, 3 inches tall and weighing 288 pounds, Bailey earned the nickname The Hulk from teammates due to his imposing physique and relentless play on the line. Over 10 NFL seasons, he appeared in 133 regular-season games with 70 starts, accumulating 248 combined tackles, 22 sacks, four forced fumbles, and seven fumble recoveries.

Island Roots Shape Miami Standout Before Draft Selection

Bailey grew up in Hog Hammock, the historic Gullah Geechee community on Sapelo Island, Georgia. Accessible only by boat, his hometown provided an unconventional upbringing defined by dirt roads, a population of fewer than 70 people, and no traffic lights.

He attended McIntosh County Academy in Darien, Georgia, where he played linebacker and fullback, before joining the University of Miami Hurricanes. During his college career, he recorded 14 sacks across his final two seasons, catching the attention of NFL scouts. The Kansas City Chiefs selected him in the third round with the 86th overall pick of the 2011 NFL Draft.

Eight Seasons in Kansas City Followed by Two Years in Atlanta

Bailey spent the first eight years of his career with the Chiefs, quickly establishing himself as a reliable anchor on defense. He signed a four-year, $25 million contract extension in November 2014 after breaking out with 41 tackles and five sacks. His most productive statistical campaign came in 2018, when he notched a career-high six sacks, recovered four fumbles, and scored his lone career touchdown on a fumble recovery during a high-scoring Monday night game against the Los Angeles Rams.

Following his tenure in Kansas City, Bailey signed a two-year, $10.5 million contract with the Atlanta Falcons in 2019. In March 2020, the Falcons handed him a one-year, $4.5 million extension, but ultimately released him in February 2021 to clear salary cap space. He did not play in the league again.

Coaches and Players Pay Tribute to Allen Bailey

Current and former players, coaches, and alumni flooded social media and team press conferences with remembrance following the announcement.

Sad news, the passing of Allen Bailey. Our hearts go out to his family. Prayers are with them. Way too young, obviously, one of my favorite players. Great kid, just sorry to see that happen to him.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes shared a recurring memory from his own early days in the league.

I tell this story every year: He was the first person I saw when I stepped into the locker room after the draft. I see Allen Bailey and I’m like, ‘This isn’t [college] anymore.’ It was surreal to see him.

Mahomes also described Bailey as one of those glue guys on the team who made everything run smoothly. Former Chiefs offensive lineman Jeff Allen posted a tribute on social media stating, Lost a teammate, a friend, a brother. God needed another angel. Rest easy, my brother. Former Hurricanes teammate Colin McCarthy similarly shared a message saying, Lost a fellow brother today… prayers to AB family! Love you Big Cuzzo!

Foundation Directs Charity Work to Coastal Georgia

Beyond the gridlock of the NFL, Bailey maintained active connections to his home region through the Allen Bailey Foundation, originally established as Allen Bailey Charities. The nonprofit provides community support, free football camps, scholarship programs, and backpack distributions across McIntosh, Glynn, and Camden counties in southeast Georgia.

The organization runs an annual Thanksgiving turkey drive that distributes more than 300 turkeys to local families facing economic need.
