Former nurse Poggiali acquitted for the death of two elderly people in the Lugo hospital

Time.news – At the end of a controversial legal case that lasted seven years, the judges of the Court of Appeal of Bologna considered that the fact does not exist: According to the magistrates, it would not therefore have been the 49-year-old former nurse Daniela Poggiali to kill, with two potassium injections, the two patients entrusted to her care at the Lugo hospital, in the Ravenna area: Rosa Calderoni, 78, died on the 8th April 2014, and 94-year-old Massimo Montanari who died on March 12, 2014.

Two trials eventually merged into a single proceeding.

“I am very happy”: so the former nurse after the sentence of double acquittal. Emotion also on the part of her sister and her boyfriend, who were also present in the courtroom.

The Attorney General had asked for confirmation of the life sentence, the defenders for acquittal. “I don’t think that in Italy there has been such a Kafkaesque story as the one involving Daniela Poggiali – said the lawyer on TG3 microphones – a woman who has lived three times, stronger than all the injustices she had to suffer”.

The judges also ordered the immediate release of the woman, who now hopes to start her life over.

The Daniela Poggiali court case began in 2014 following the death of Rosa Calderoni, a 78-year-old patient. The woman was sentenced in the first instance to life imprisonment by the Ravenna court on charges of killing the old woman with a lethal dose of potassium.

To end up in the news were some photographs that portrayed smiling and irreverent next to the bodies of some deceased patients.

In July 2017, the appeal process overturned the sentence, exonerating the woman for lack of evidence. Daniela Poggiali was released from prison after 1003 days in the cell.

Subsequently, the Court of Cassation asked to repeat the appeal process, evaluating the need to re-analyze the circumstantial compendium which was followed by the second acquittal of the bis appeal.

Daniela Poggiali was disbarred in 2017 from the order of nurses for photographic shots and after accusations of theft in the ward, a story that saw a conviction confirmed in the Supreme Court in 2018.

In 2017, a further twelve suspected deaths occurred at the Lugo hospital were analyzed. The prosecutor asked for the dismissal for lack of evidence.
