Alain Gardère, suspected in particular of corruption and embezzlement of public funds, will be tried by the criminal court. “The investigating judge notified on August 10 an order for referral to the criminal court for two legal persons and thirteen natural persons, including the ex-prefect Alain Gardère”, indicates a judicial source to AFP, confirming information from the world.

The former Paris police chief will be tried for numerous offenses committed between 2005 and 2015, including offenses of abuse of authority with a view to defeating the law, passive corruption by a public official, concealment of abuse of corporate assets, forgery and use of forgery by a person holding public authority as well as embezzlement of public funds and laundering of tax evasion. These offenses are punishable by penalties ranging from five to ten years’ imprisonment.

“The dismissal order of the investigating judge mentions that the telephone tapping established that Alain Gardère systematically took advantage of his position to obtain advantages, and did not put limits on the services requested by his friends or acquaintances”, advances the judicial source.

Real estate arrangements and issuance of weapons

The arrangements between the defendants relate to real estate transactions, building or swimming pool works, the illegitimate obtaining of approvals for security agents, the issuance of weapons, the transfer of civil servants or the hiring of personnel or even solicitations of civil servants for undue tasks.

Alain Gardère is also suspected of having used his influence to render numerous services in exchange for gifts for him and those around him: starred restaurants, works, concert tickets, holidays…

Former commissioner close to Nicolas Sarkozy when the latter was Minister of the Interior and then at the Élysée, Alain Gardère was prefect in charge of security in Marseille in 2011, then at Roissy and Le Bourget airports (2012-2014). In 2015-2016, he headed the National Council for Private Security Activities (Cnaps), under the supervision of the Ministry of the Interior. In 2016, Alain Gardère, then owner of ten apartments, had to leave his HLM housing in Puteaux after a scandal.
