Pope Benedict XVI voluntarily resigned in 2013 citing health and age. Due to his old age, he was resting at the Vatican and fell ill a few days ago. On learning this, the current Pope Francis I personally met him and inquired about his well-being.

In this case, today (Dec. 31) at 9:34 am, the former Pope Benedict XVI passed away in the Vatican, the Vatican spokesperson has issued a statement.
